Also known as D-mannitol, chemical name: 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydroxyhexane. It is a white crystalline or crystalline powder; odorless. It is easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, and almost insoluble in ether. The melting point is 166~170℃.

Mannitol is widely used in pharmaceutical preparations, and can be used as a sweetener; diluent for tablets and capsules; tonic; excipient for freeze-drying preparations (skeleton forming agent); binder; stabilizer; sugar coating agent; isotonic agent; disintegrant; solubilizer.

Incompatibilities: High concentrations of mannitol solution may salt out in the presence of potassium chloride or sodium chloride. 2mg/ml and 30mg/ml of cefazolin sodium are incompatible with 20% (W/V) mannitol aqueous solution. Mannitol is incompatible with xylitol infusion and forms complexes with certain metals such as aluminum, copper and iron. Reduced sugar impurities in mannitol may imply oxidative degradation of peptides during freeze-drying.
