Also known as PEG400, it is a mixture obtained by the polycondensation of ethylene oxide and water. It is a colorless or almost colorless viscous liquid; slightly peculiar odor. It is easily soluble in water or ethanol, and insoluble in ether.
PEG400 is mainly used as a thickener, solvent, solubilizer, and stabilizer for oil/water emulsions. It is used as a water-soluble ointment base and suppository base in the manufacture of creams, suppositories, etc.
Incompatibilities: Do not use with oxidants, acids such as iodine, bismuth, mercury, silver salts, aspirin, theophylline derivatives, etc.; it also undergoes incompatibility reactions with some acidic pigments; it can reduce the antibacterial activity of penicillin, bacitracin, etc., and reduce the bacteriostatic effect of benzoate preservatives; incompatibility with phenol, tannic acid, and salicylic acid can cause softening and liquefaction. It can cause discoloration when encountering sulfonamides and anthraquinones; it can cause sorbitol to precipitate from the mixture; it can migrate from film coatings and interact with the core ingredients.
